5G Broadcast — Year-End Update

FROM THE EDITOR

December 20, 2025

As the year comes to a close, 5G Broadcast continued its steady transition from experimentation to structured industry planning, with clear signals of long-term commitment across standards bodies, broadcasters, and technology providers.

A major milestone this year was the advancement of coordinated industry planning in Europe. The 5G Broadcast Strategic Task Force (5BSTF) brought together leading broadcast network operators and technology partners to define a clear commercial roadmap targeting initial deployments around 2027. This effort reflects growing consensus on how 5G Broadcast can be introduced sustainably and at scale.

Work within 3GPP continued to reinforce the technical foundation for 5G Broadcast, including enhancements related to broadcast spectrum usage and reception performance. These developments provided greater confidence for moving forward with real-world trials and future commercial planning.

Throughout the year Live demonstrations remained central throughout the year, with IBC 2025 providing strong real-world validation. At IBC, XGen Network (XGN) showcased a practical business use case by delivering content directly to digital screens using 5G Broadcast, demonstrating the technology’s value beyond smartphones and its efficiency for large-scale content distribution.

At the end of the year, 5G Broadcast stands on a much firmer foundation than before:

  • A defined commercial horizon

  • Continued standards evolution

  • Proven live demonstrations

  • Increasing alignment across broadcasters, vendors, and regulators

The focus now shifts toward scaled trials, device integration, and regulatory readiness, setting the stage for the next phase of deployment.

As we enter the holiday season, we would like to thank all partners, collaborators, and contributors who continue to move the 5G Broadcast ecosystem forward through practical progress and collaboration. Wishing you a joyus holiday season and a successful New Year ahead.
