In the US ATSC 3.0 Needs to be Voluntary not Mandatory

The U.S. is in a definite transition period for broadcasting. Unlike the rest of the world, the U.S. has two categories of broadcasters with those that transit with an Effective Radiated Power (ERP) of 15kw or less being Low Power (LPTV) stations. Stations with more than 15kw (and as much as 100kw) are known as Full Power Stations. There are separate regulations regarding the two services. LPTV is secondary to full power and is meant for local coverage and innovation.

The NAB has filed a request to the FCC to make an ATSC 3.0 transition mandatory for all broadcasters. The LPTVBA is adamantly against this request and has joined other organizations in this belief, led by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA.)

Over the last week, LPTVBA has been in Ex Parte FCC meetings regarding NAB's request for mandatory ATSC 3.0 conversion. The meetings were led by CTA (Consumer Technology Association) with the FCC Chairman's office, the Media Bureau, and Commissioner Gomez' office along with industry associations, Public Knowledge, (NCTA (The Internet & Television Association), ACA Connects (America’s Communications Association), American Television Alliance (ATVA), and LPTV Broadcasters Association (LPTVBA)
