5G Broadcast — Europe on the Move
FROM THE EDITOR
January 31, 2026
This week, the spotlight remains firmly on Europe’s accelerating 5G Broadcast efforts as industry stakeholders refine the vision for deployment across the region. The recently published “5G Broadcast - Horizons for Europe” report — prepared by South 180 at the request of Broadcast Networks Europe (BNE) — provides a clear, comprehensive view of how this technology could be rolled out in the coming years. The document outlines not only how 5G Broadcast works, but also its role within Europe’s media ecosystem, highlighting successful trials, use cases, and policy priorities to support widespread adoption.
"5G Broadcast is Europe’s response to the evolving needs of citizens and businesses, guaranteeing universal, high-quality, and resilient access to TV and radio for all" - South 180 5G Broadcast Horizon report.
The report underscores several key themes emerging across Europe’s 5G Broadcast landscape:
Broad engagement of stakeholders — broadcast network operators, content providers, and regulators converging around common goals and use cases.
Practical scenarios for deployment, including linear video/audio services to mobile devices, emergency alerting capabilities, and the integration of broadcast and broadband channels.
Policy and regulatory needs to pave the way for commercial rollouts and spectrum support across EU member states.
These elements together form a roadmap that moves beyond pure technology demonstration toward real service planning and stakeholder alignment. Across the broader ecosystem, efforts are advancing in parallel — including the release of a common 5G Broadcast receiver profile for Europe. This will help guide chipset and device manufacturers on the specific requirements expected in European markets.
Through these harmonization steps, the industry is creating clearer signals to OEMs that 5G Broadcast support is not just desirable but strategically aligned with Europe’s future media landscape.
