Castanet tees up 5G Broadcast market trials
Castanet, a startup with ambitions to build a national 5G Broadcast network underpinned by hundreds of low-power television (LPTV) stations, is planning to conduct at least three field trials this year.
Fotheringham said Castanet also has a memorandum of understanding with HC2 for a second pilot, set for Las Vegas. Castanet hopes to have that trial stood up in time for the NAB Show, which gets underway in mid-April. HC2 is also contributing a Sacramento-based station for an additional pilot.
Estonia : 5G Broadcast innovation with Pocket Siren emergency alert system
At the Broadcast Networks Europe (BNE) event in Brussels, Estonia took centre stage as Levira presented Pocket Siren, Europe’s first nationwide emergency alert system built on 5G Broadcast technology. Developed by Levira Pocket Siren represents a landmark in public safety innovation that ensures emergency alerts can reach citizens even when conventional mobile and internet networks fail, such as during natural disasters or national crises.
LPTV broadcasters back NextGen TV deadline, seek exemption for low-power TV
The Low Power Television Broadcasters Association backed a congressional call for the FCC to set a firm deadline for full-power broadcasters to complete the transition to ATSC 3.0, while urging regulators not to apply the mandate to low-power TV stations. The association also pointed to growing interest among low-power broadcasters in the 5G Broadcast standard.
LPTVBA asked Congress to encourage the FCC to open a rulemaking for voluntary 5G Broadcast use by low-power stations.
