The Industry is Ready for 5G Broadcast

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello 5G Broadcast Enthusiasts,

As conversations around the future of television reach new heights, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the industry is ready for 5G Broadcast.

In a powerful letter to the U.S. Senate and House Commerce Committees, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which represents over 1,200 of America’s most innovative technology companies, voiced strong opposition to any mandated adoption of ATSC 3.0 (NEXTGEN TV) across all televisions in US. Their stance? Let innovation speak for itself—not government mandates.

Backed by the globally recognized 3GPP standard, 5G Broadcast is a natural fit in today’s converged communications environment. Its ability to deliver rich content—directly to mobile devices, vehicles, and homes—without needing internet or cellular data is opening up new frontiers in public safety, education, entertainment, and more.

From chipmakers to smartphone manufacturers, automakers to broadcasters, companies are already building toward a 5G Broadcast future. The industry is moving together—guided not by mandates, but by real-world opportunity and practical value.

5G Broadcast represents a future of lower costs, broader accessibility, and rapid global adoption. Unlike closed legacy standards, it’s already embedded in the innovation roadmap of chipmakers, handset manufacturers, automakers, and broadcasters worldwide. As CTA so aptly put it, the market—not mandates—should decide what technology wins. And all signs point to 5G Broadcast.

This Can Destroy TV – A Call to Action for future of broadcasters

TV manufacturing is a very slim margin business. There is a 10% duty on import of a television set, meaning a TV with a broadcast tuner. However, there is 0% duty on import of a monitor without a broadcast tuner. By eliminating a broadcast tuner (ATSC 1.0, ATSC 3.0, DVB, ISDB), manufacturers can save approximately $30 plus zero import duty. On the manufacturing end, there could be one model for the world as no tuner is installed. Manufacturers or third parties would sell tuner boxes to receive OTA broadcast television which then could be paired with a monitor.

5G Broadcast emerges to best advantage

Ratkaj has a very clear view of the core trend. He says: “We do not see 5G Broadcast as a replacement for DTT, which primarily serves home viewing on large TVs. In contrast 5G Broadcast aims at mobile viewing. The main motivation for broadcasters to adopt it is to secure direct access to personal/mobile devices, and in cars. One can think of 5G Broadcast as an efficient way of streaming media content to large audiences.
