Why 5G Broadcast Strengthens the Mobile Ecosystem

A recurring question raised by skeptics of 5G Broadcast—especially among proponents of older standards like ATSC 3.0—is whether Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will ever allow 5G Broadcast to succeed. The claim that MNOs “control the market” and would block new technologies often overlooks one essential truth: 5G Broadcast is not in competition with mobile networks—it complements them.
5G Broadcast operates as a force multiplier for existing cellular infrastructure, not a replacement. By offloading high-volume, one-to-many transmissions—such as live video, software updates, or public alerts—from congested unicast networks, it helps MNOs deliver better service at lower cost. This collaboration strengthens network resilience, reduces congestion, and expands monetization opportunities.
A perfect example of this partnership mindset came from CelcomDigi Berhad, Malaysia’s largest wireless carrier. At a recent presentation, Mr. Muhammed Rezza Alui showcased powerful use cases that demonstrate how 5G Broadcast can enhance—not compete with—mobile networks:
Reduce network strain at large events by broadcasting shared content—like live replays and commentary—to every user simultaneously, ensuring smooth experiences even in crowded stadiums.
Unlock new monetization models, enabling carriers to deliver premium feeds, additional camera views, or real-time stats to subscribers without adding network load.
Expand nationwide reach by bringing live video, infotainment, and emergency alerts to users in rural and underserved areas.
As Mr. Rezza emphasized, 5G Broadcast is not merely a broadcasting tool—it’s a strategic enabler for the mobile industry. By merging broadcast reliability with mobile flexibility, operators can deliver richer, more efficient services and elevate customer satisfaction.
