Countdown to IBC– 5G Broadcast Takes Center Stage

FROM THE EDITOR

IBC 2025 is just around the corner, and this year, 5G Broadcast is stepping into the spotlight as the next-generation technology set to transform the broadcast and communications landscape. From redefining content delivery to unlocking new business models, 5G Broadcast is no longer just an idea—it’s becoming a global movement.

Recent industry news reinforces this momentum. In Germany, Media Broadcast has launched a new 5G Broadcast pilot in Halle, leveraging existing DVB-T2 infrastructure to test transmission speed, power efficiency, and content quality. Importantly, the trials also include real-time disaster warning scenarios—demonstrating how 5G Broadcast can play a pivotal role in delivering timely, critical information to the public.

Across the Atlantic, the FCC has begun a reexamination of the nation’s Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), aiming to assess resilience, geographic precision, and multi-modal delivery. This renewed focus on alerting capabilities creates a strong opening for broadcast-based solutions, with 5G Broadcast offering a proven, scalable way to reach millions without reliance on cellular or internet networks.
